Early 20th century Kansas saw a peculiar case of a Native American woman illegally occupying a burial ground. And not just any woman - Lyda B. Conley was a lawyer and frankly, a total badass. In this episode we’re reading a 1910 article about her and her sister's legal (and physical!) battle that ended up at the Supreme Court.

I was born in 1953 and grew up in Ohio. Can't get too much more "regular people" than that. If you have watched any of the "I Love Lucy" shows, you would actually get an authentic look of how the everyday woman dressed back then. The first show aired in October of 1951 and the last in 1957, so it shows a good amount of fashions from that decade. I do remember my mother and aunts dressing up to go downtown or to go shopping, but for everyday staying at home, Ethel's "house" dresses were what I saw my mom wear or "clamdiggers" (during the hot months) or straight leg pants (to the ankle) and simple cotton tops with flats, and yes, penny loafer style shoes. But the closets were very small in most houses as were the bedrooms, so there was a reason for the limited wardrobe and clothes that didn't have much pattern--they had to go with everything and they had to be made with fabrics that could stand, not only repeated washings, but a wringer washer at that. (I was 10 years old before we got a regular washing machine.) For the average person, there wasn't a lot of money to be spending on clothes and shoes and accessories for yourself or your kids. My sister and I shared a room with one tiny closet in it and both of our clothes and shoes fit in it with room to spare. I'm talking a closet the dimensions of our linen closets today--as you would find in houses built during that time. My mother wore eyeliner (for special occasions), maybe a little blush, but she wore shades of red lipstick because she was Italian and had the dark black wavy hair and milky complexion so she looked stunning in that color. The accent was usually on the mouth, not so much the whole face, to be honest. If a woman wore no other make-up, lipstick was always a must. I'm sure there were many women who were fashion forward back then, but not really in the rural or smaller cities/towns. Special occasions were for the one good dress/outfit you owned--not for running out and buying something no one has seen before. That came more in the 80's, in my experience.

I didnt watch it, but i love Empire Line dresses. Hollywood are guilty of not doing their fashion research. Women in cowboy films have bleached blonde bouffant hair, thick makeup, bright red lipstick and thick eyeliner. Looks ridiculous. Also Doctor Zhivago had Julie Christie with bleached blonde 1960s hair, makeup and pale lipstick 😅😅😅

Giving up that title might mean giving up that house in the country and the income that went with it. The people who were invited to court were "landed" and "titled" people. Their income came from the land that came with their titles. If they angered the king/queen, they could see their land given to someone else. Showing up to court in a dress you didn't like was an easy way to be rich back then.

I'm in AWE. The woman who staked her entire life to defend her indisputably righteous cause would deserve NOTHING less 😤😤

The people that are complaining about Karolina analyzing the fashion in Bridgerton and it’s historical accuracy because the show is fiction are completely missing the point. She’s well aware the show isn’t meant to be accurate and isn’t hating on the show for them taking liberties with the costumes. She’s simply using it as an opportunity to teach about what *would* be historically accurate to those interested in historical fashion. If you’re not interested, then you may not be the target audience.

My problem is when designers are so full of their own "greatness" they think they can do whatever they please. First of all, it wouldn't have been that difficult to be faithful to the era, or even mostly faithful with a few anachronistic looks for effect (see Outlander). But this just seems like a bad AU fanfic or something. It's just so wrong. Also, theoretically they should have a greater budget for costumes in this third season with the success of the previous two. But the material they used looks so cheap, like bargain bin polyester.

What were women like in 1850. Well, my great, great grandmother joined her husband, and her 3 kids (Oh, she was pregnant) on a farm wagon and made the incredible trek from Illinois to California, giving birth to my great grandfather in the Nevada desert. When I think of how spoiled women are today, it boggles my mind!

I wonder if the absurd design was for the designer to show off what they can do in a big, obvious way. I'm thinking like the crazy clothes you see at Paris fashion week. The clothes aren't to be worn as normal clothes, but to draw attention to the designer saying "look what i can do. See how talented i am."

I recently commented on another post that this show has completely lost its mind in season 3. Somehow they’ve gone from somewhat honoring the Regency era with the delicate color palette of costumes/design, barely there makeup and hairstyles in season 1 to loud, garish, tacky fabrics and brightly colored over the top 80s makeup & hair in season 3. It’s like the producers have gone from creating a beautiful, fun, more fantasy version of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ to ‘Dynasty’. It’s awful.

I am a but late on this video but i would think it really interesting if you looked at modern styles that developed out of histrorical styles. For example Victorian Goth. I think it might be quite funny to rate that stuff on how historicaly acurate it is.
